What is AI Overviews (AIO)?

AI Overviews, often abbreviated AIO, are the generative summaries that appear at the top of Google Search results for many informational queries. They synthesise an answer in natural language, then cite a small group of source pages, usually three to ten, in line with the text.

By 2026 AI Overviews are the default surface for a majority of how to, comparison, and research style queries. They sit above the traditional blue links and, in many cases, fully resolve the user's question on the results page itself.

How it works

Google's models read the live index, retrieve a set of candidate pages, and generate an answer grounded in that retrieved content. Citation slots are awarded to pages judged authoritative, on topic, and well structured, with clear headings, definitions, and supporting data.

Ranking inside an AIO is not the same as ranking blue links. A page can be the top organic result and still be left out of the AI Overview if its structure makes it hard to extract crisp passages, or if a competing source has stronger entity coverage on the specific question.

Why it matters

For publishers, AI Overviews are the single biggest variable in 2026 search traffic. Pages that earn citations keep some referral value and brand authority, while pages that lose to AIO often see double digit click declines.

For advertisers, AIO reshapes the funnel by handling more upper funnel research before any ad is served, which raises the bar on bottom funnel keywords, branded queries, and on the structured product information that AI engines actually quote.
