The 6-component prompt structure

Strong prompts have structure. For images, six components carry the load. For text, five do.

Image prompt structure

The image prompt covers what is in the frame and how it is rendered.

  • Subject. Who or what the image shows. "A 32-year-old runner in a navy windbreaker."
  • Action. What the subject is doing. "Mid-stride on a rainy city street at dawn."
  • Context. The scene and situation. "Wet pavement, soft fog, neon storefront reflections."
  • Composition. Framing rules. "Three-quarter angle, shallow depth of field, 4:5 vertical."
  • Lighting. The light source and quality. "Cool ambient light, warm rim light from the storefront."
  • Style. The visual register. "Editorial sportswear photography, shot on a 50mm lens."

Front-load the most important component. Models weight the start of the prompt heavier. Stable Diffusion, Imagen 3, and Flux all share this bias.

Text prompt structure

Text prompts cover the role, the task, and the rules.

  • Role. Who the model is acting as. "You are a senior performance copywriter for a DTC skincare brand."
  • Task. What you want it to do. "Write 10 Meta primary text variants for a hydrating serum launch."
  • Context. The brand and product details. Brand voice, product page copy, real customer reviews.
  • Constraints. Hard rules. Character limits, banned words, forbidden phrases.
  • Format. The output shape. "Return as a numbered list. No preamble. No headers."

Google's prompt design guidance for Gemini stresses the same five-part frame. The labels vary. The structure does not.

For ad copy at volume, few-shot wins. Two to three approved past winners in the system prompt anchor the voice. For analysis tasks like "rank these 30 headlines by likely CTR and explain," chain-of-thought wins. For pure variant production once the brand profile is locked, zero-shot is fastest.

Common prompt mistakes

Five mistakes show up in almost every first-month rollout.

Vague subject lines. "A cool ad for our new shoe" returns whatever the model wants. Specify the audience, the moment, the visual register, and the constraints.

Mixing angles in one prompt. Asking for "10 headlines that emphasize price, quality, and convenience" returns 10 mush-headlines. Run three separate batches, one angle each.

Trusting the model's defaults. Default outputs skew demographically narrow and tonally generic. Specify age, body type, ethnicity, and brand voice on every run.

Skipping the brand profile. Without a system prompt that defines voice, banned words, and approved phrasings, every batch sounds like a different company.

Treating "do not" as a hard rule. Text models ignore negative instructions roughly half the time. Replace "do not use exclamation marks" with "use only periods and commas as terminal punctuation."

Real-world example, a marketing prompt iteration

A subscription coffee brand wants 10 Meta headlines for a winter blend launch.

v1, vague prompt.

Output. Generic SaaS-style claims. "Discover our amazing new blend." "The coffee experience reimagined." Zero usable.

v2, structured prompt.

Role: Senior DTC copywriter for a single-origin coffee brand.
Brand voice: warm, specific, grounded. No superlatives. No hedge words.
Task: Write 10 Meta primary text variants for the Winter Reserve blend launch.
Audience: existing subscribers, ages 28 to 45, urban.
Product context: dark roast, notes of cocoa and dried fig, $24 for 12oz.
Constraints: under 90 characters. No exclamation marks. No "discover."
Format: numbered list, no preamble.

Output. 10 headlines, 7 usable. Sharper, but the voice still drifts toward stock.

Examples of past winners:

Output. 10 headlines, 9 usable. The voice locks. The angles vary. Two of the 10 outperformed the manually-written control on Meta within 6 days.

The lesson. Each iteration tightened structure or added source. None of them added length for length's sake.

Prompt engineering in modern ad platforms

Prompt engineering used to live in standalone tools. In 2026 it lives inside the ad platform.
