> TL;DR: Build a Demand Gen campaign. Upload a seed list of 100+ matched customers. Pick Narrow, Balanced, or Broad reach. Save and wait 2-3 days. Google finds new users who look like your best customers.
Google Lookalike audiences help you reach new customers who behave like your best ones. This guide covers the full setup, from building your seed list to reading your first reports.
What is a Google Lookalike Audience?
Google Lookalike segments find new users who behave like your existing customers. You provide the examples. Google AI finds more people like them at scale.
What 'seed list' means
A seed list is the first-party audience you already own. It tells Google who your best customers are. Google then builds a larger audience with similar behavioral signals.
Why Lookalike audiences work
Google matches behavioral patterns, not just demographics. Users in a Lookalike segment share purchase intent signals with your seed list. That makes them warmer than cold prospecting.
Campaign type requirement (Demand Gen only)
Per Google's Ads Help Center, Lookalike segments work only in Demand Gen campaigns. Search, Display, Shopping, and Video campaigns do not support them. If you attach a Lookalike segment to another campaign type, Google marks it "Eligible - Limited" and drops the Lookalike portion entirely.
How to Prepare Your Seed List
A strong seed list is the foundation of a useful Lookalike segment.
Minimum data requirement (100+ matched people)
Google requires at least 100 active matched people across all seed lists combined. Below that threshold, your segment status shows "seed list too small" and will not populate.
Seed list sources: Customer Match, website visitors, app users, YouTube, GA
Google Ads documentation states that valid seed list sources include:
- Customer Match lists (uploaded customer emails or phone numbers)
- Website visitors tracked via your Google tag
- App users from mobile events
- YouTube audiences (viewers, subscribers, engagers)
- Google Analytics audiences imported into Google Ads
Only first-party data qualifies. Third-party data sources are not eligible.
Best practices for seed list quality
Use high-intent seed lists. Recent converters and brand-engaged users produce better Lookalike matches than broad site visitors. Quality beats quantity here.
Step-by-Step: Create Your Lookalike Segment
Follow these steps inside Google Ads.
Open a new Demand Gen campaign
Go to Campaigns. Click the plus icon and select New Campaign. Choose Demand Gen as your campaign type. Lookalike segments attach during this setup flow.
Add audience at ad group level
Inside the Demand Gen campaign, open an ad group. Find the Audiences section. Click Edit audience segments.
Select and name your Lookalike segment
Click Browse. Select New Segment. Choose Lookalike. Give your segment a clear, descriptive name so you can find it later.
Upload or select seed lists (1-10 lists)
Select between 1 and 10 seed lists. You can mix sources, for example Customer Match plus YouTube audiences. More high-quality seed lists generally improve match accuracy.
Choose reach level: Narrow, Balanced, or Broad
Pick the reach level that fits your campaign goal. See the next section for what each option means.
Set target locations
Define the geographic area you want to reach. Google calculates the percentage-based reach against this location.
Save and allow 2-3 days to populate
Save the segment and wait. Google recommends creating the segment 2-3 days before your campaign launch. This gives the algorithm time to fully populate the audience.
Understanding Reach Levels
Narrow: 2.5% of target location (highest similarity)
Narrow targets the top 2.5% of your location population most similar to your seed list. Smaller reach. Tightest match. Best for high-value conversion campaigns.
Balanced: 5% of target location (balanced reach)
Balanced doubles the reach while keeping strong similarity signals. It is a solid default for most Demand Gen campaigns.
Broad: 10% of target location (largest reach)
Broad captures up to 10% of your target location. Largest pool. Widest similarity range. Best for awareness and top-of-funnel goals.
Heads up: Starting March 2026, Google is transitioning Lookalike segments to "signal mode." Reach selections will guide Google AI rather than enforce hard similarity thresholds. Advertisers can opt out via a Google form. Current behavior remains active until then.
Monitor and Report on Your Lookalike Segment
Check segment status (populating, complete, seed list too small, inactive)
Open Audience Manager. The segment status shows one of four states: populating, complete, seed list too small, or inactive. A "complete" status means the audience is ready to serve.
Access reports via Campaigns or Audiences menu
Go to Campaigns > Reports > Audience segment. Or open the Audiences menu directly. Both paths show impression, click, and conversion data broken down by segment.
Important: You cannot edit the segment after creation
Lookalike segments are fixed once saved. If your seed list or targeting strategy changes significantly, delete the segment and create a new one from scratch.
Segment auto-refreshes every 1-2 days
Google refreshes Lookalike segments every 1-2 days automatically. No manual update is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a Google Lookalike audience in a Search or Display campaign?
No. Lookalike segments are only available in Demand Gen campaigns. If you apply one to Search, Display, Shopping, or Video, Google marks the audience 'Eligible - Limited' and ignores the Lookalike portion. You must use Demand Gen.
How many seed lists can I add to one Lookalike segment?
Between 1 and 10. You can mix sources, such as a Customer Match list combined with a YouTube audience, in a single segment. Using multiple high-quality lists generally improves match accuracy.
What happens if my seed list has fewer than 100 matched users?
The segment status shows 'seed list too small' and the audience will not populate. Add more users to your seed list or combine multiple lists until you reach at least 100 active matched people across all submitted lists.
