What Is the Shopify Google Product Catalog?
Your Shopify product catalog becomes your Google Shopping feed. Sync it to Google Merchant Center and your products appear on Google Shopping, Performance Max campaigns, and across other Google surfaces.
How Shopify syncs to Google Merchant Center
The Google & YouTube channel app handles the connection. Install it once. Shopify automatically pushes all products available to your online store to Merchant Center. Price, inventory, and image updates sync on an ongoing basis.
Why you need a product catalog for Google Shopping and Performance Max
Google Shopping and Performance Max both pull product data directly from Merchant Center. No catalog, no ads. A complete, accurate catalog means better ad eligibility, fewer disapprovals, and more placements across Google.

How to Set Up Shopify Google Product Catalog
Step 1: Install the Google & YouTube app on Shopify
Go to the Shopify App Store. Search for "Google & YouTube" and install it. Connect your Google account. Link an existing Merchant Center account or create a new one during setup. Shopify begins syncing products immediately.
Step 2: Make products available to the channel
Open a product in Shopify. Under Sales Channels, enable Google. Products not assigned to the Google channel will not sync. Use the bulk editor on the Products page to enable multiple products at once.
Step 3: Add missing product data (GTIN, category, description, image)
Google requires these fields for every product: title, description, image, price, availability, and GTIN. If you don't have a GTIN, provide brand plus MPN as an alternative. Per the Shopify Help Center, you can view each product's sync status and fill in missing required data directly inside the Google & YouTube channel dashboard.
For images, Google's current minimum is 100 × 100 px for non-apparel and 250 × 250 px for apparel. Both thresholds increase to 500 × 500 px on January 31, 2027. Per Google's Merchant Center documentation, 1,500 × 1,500 px is recommended for best performance across Shopping and Performance Max.
Step 4: Verify sync status in Merchant Center
Open Google Merchant Center. Navigate to Products > All Products. Approved products show a green status. Disapproved products display specific error codes with fix instructions. Resolve all errors before launching campaigns.

Common Sync Errors and How to Fix Them
Missing description or image
Add a product description in Shopify. It must be informative and specific, not just a repeat of the title. Product images must be present and hosted on a publicly accessible URL.
Missing GTIN or MPN
If your product has a barcode, enter it as the GTIN in Shopify. If it doesn't, enter your brand name and the manufacturer part number instead. Google accepts either combination.
Promotional overlays or excessive capitalization
Google does not allow promotional text, logos, watermarks, or badges on product images. Remove any overlays from product photos. Use sentence case or title case for product titles. All-caps titles fail sync automatically.
Product not appearing on Google after sync
Google reviews newly synced products within 3-5 business days. If that window has passed, check Merchant Center for disapproval statuses. A policy violation prevents display regardless of whether the sync succeeded.

Optimize Product Data for Performance
Write product titles and descriptions for Google
Put the most important keywords at the front of your title. Include brand, product type, size, and color where relevant. Keep descriptions factual and detailed. Shoppers and Google's algorithm both benefit from specifics.
Assign correct Google product categories
Google auto-assigns categories based on your title, description, GTIN, and brand. You can override any category per product using the google_product_category attribute. Google's taxonomy covers 6,000+ categories. The correct category enforces the right attribute requirements and improves how your products surface across placements.
Use Product Studio to enhance images
Product Studio is a free AI image tool available to Shopify users connected to Merchant Center. Generate scene backgrounds, remove backgrounds, upscale resolution, and create short product videos. Images saved to Merchant Center propagate to Shopping ads and Performance Max campaigns automatically. Note that regulated goods (alcohol, pharmaceuticals, tobacco, and similar categories) cannot be generated with Product Studio.
