What is an agentic workflow?
An agentic workflow is an AI system that takes a goal, breaks it into steps, calls external tools to act on each step, and decides what to do next based on the result. The model does not just answer. It plans, acts, observes, and re-plans inside a control loop until the task is finished.
The pattern has three required parts:
- A reasoning model. Usually a large language model that can plan and pick actions.
- Tools. APIs, search, code execution, file access, ad-platform endpoints. The model calls these to act on the real world.
- A control loop. The runtime that feeds tool outputs back into the model so the next step gets chosen with fresh context.
Anthropic's guide to building effective agents draws a useful line. Workflows are systems where models follow predefined paths. Agents are systems where models direct their own paths. Most production "agentic" systems sit on a spectrum between the two.
How an AI agent differs from a single-prompt LLM call
A single LLM call takes one prompt, returns one response, and stops. An agent takes a goal, runs a loop, and may call dozens of tools before it finishes. Four properties separate the two.
Memory
A single call has the context window and nothing else. An agent keeps state across steps. Short-term memory holds the current task. Long-term memory, often a vector store, holds prior runs, brand assets, and learned preferences. Memory is what lets the agent improve across attempts instead of starting cold every time.
Tool use
A single call produces text. An agent produces tool calls. It can search the web, read a database, run code, hit an ad API, or trigger another agent. The OpenAI Assistants API and equivalent frameworks expose this as function calling. The model emits a structured JSON tool call. The runtime executes it. The result feeds back in.
Multi-step reasoning
A single call answers in one shot. An agent decomposes a goal. "Launch a Meta campaign for this product" becomes a plan: pull product data, generate variants, write copy, set targeting, push to API, monitor for 24 hours. Each sub-task may spawn its own loop.
Autonomy
A single call needs a human between every prompt. An agent runs unattended once started. The autonomy band varies. Low-autonomy agents check in after each step. High-autonomy agents run for hours and only surface on completion or error.
Agentic workflows in marketing
McKinsey's "Why agents are the next frontier of generative AI" frames agentic systems as the shift from copilots that suggest to systems that act. In performance marketing, the action surface is wide. Five common workflows map cleanly to agent loops.

Each row used to be a separate tool with a human in the middle. Agentic systems chain them. The keyword agent hands its list to the creative agent. The creative agent hands its variants to the launch agent. The launch agent hands live campaigns to the optimization agent. The marketer sets the goal at the top and reviews the output at the bottom.
Multi-agent systems
A single agent struggles when a task spans many domains. Multi-agent systems split the work. One agent specializes in research. Another in copy. Another in image rendering. Another in API calls. A coordinator agent routes sub-tasks to the right specialist and assembles the final result.
The pattern reduces context bloat. Each specialist holds only the tools and memory it needs. The coordinator holds the plan. Frameworks like CrewAI, LangGraph, and AutoGen all ship variants of this design.

Brand drift. Without a locked brand kit, generated creative slides toward generic stock looks. Without a locked tone-of-voice prompt, copy slides toward marketing cliche. The fix: brand kit and voice rules as system constraints, not soft prompts.
Runaway spend. An agent with ad-platform write access and a faulty plan can burn a daily budget in minutes. The fix: hard caps per agent run, allow-listed actions, dollar thresholds that require human approval before execution.

The coordinator agent builds the plan. Five specialist agents run in sequence.
- Research agent. Pulls 1,400 keywords around the product category, scores them, and returns 22 transactional terms.
